Yoga Off East began as the vision of a Duke University alum upon her return to Durham after a career as a Division I collegiate tennis coach. Kathryn Sell Smith realized that yoga would be an integral part of her transition out of a lifelong commitment to the sport of tennis. While tennis remains a part of Kathryn’s life (her husband, Ramsey, is the Duke Men’s Tennis Coach), she has happily traded in her tennis racquets for a yoga mat. At Global Breath Studio, we are committed to offering a space where community can be built and strengthened, and where we can support one another both on & off our yoga mats.Once a month we host a “Mindful Community in Action” potluck for our community (and extended community) to come together and support each other as we work to make our city and country more safe, equitable, fair, and loving.
One of the most impactful parts of this monthly event is putting together care packages to give to the homeless. This is where we’re asking for your support! Each bag typically includes: snacks, bottled water, wipes, deodorant, toilet paper, toothbrush, razor, feminine sanitary products, along with a handwritten note with words of connection and encouragement.
Each month we put together a total of 50 bags. The cost of the items in the bags (including the cost of the bags themselves) is $200. In order to keep the creation of these care packages possible and sustainable, we humbly ask for a donation in whatever amount you can offer. No amount is too small! We hope to raise $2400 per year in order to sustain the $200/month cost. All funds raised will go directly to our care package fund.
If you’d like to come be a part of the action, please join us on the second Friday of every month from 6-7:30pm for Mindful Community in Action. It is free to attend and open to anyone. Children, friends and family are welcome!

We know the power that yoga has to change lives because it’s changed ours. Everyone on our team is passionate about yoga, mindfulness, and the effects yoga and meditation can have on our health and well-being. This passion for wellness runs through everything we do, whether we’re teaching classes, providing massage, answering your questions, or taking you to that next level with teacher trainings.
Our team is led by our studio owner and Duke Anatomy faculty member Sara Doyle, PhD, and much of what we do is rooted in an understanding of anatomy and functional movement. We are interested in the real effects of yoga and teaching you how your body works.
When it comes to our team, we treat our experienced teachers and knowledgeable staff with respect, ensuring they are treated fairly and compensated fully for their talent and expertise. And when it comes to you, we make sure there is always someone at the front desk to answer your questions, ensure that the shop has what you need, and help you find the best classes for your individual practice.
