Why Bacardi Doesn’t Want You to Use Straws
Nothing like a cool mojito on the beach under the hot Miami sun. Just don’t forget to add “no straw, please” to your drink order.
It should come to no surprise that considering we use 500,000,000 straws each day, they are the 5th most collected item in the ocean. Plastics are so abundant in the world’s ocean that islands the size of Texas are growing in size. We are now finding plastics in the guts of 44% of seabirds and 22% of whales and dolphins and in the seafood we eat.
In recognition of its new Good Spirited: Building a Sustainable Future environmental campaign, Bacardi, the world’s largest privately held spirits company has launched an in-house initiative to remove straws and stirrers in cocktails at company events. The movement is expected to save 12,000 straws and stirrers from landfills, from in-house happy hours alone, each year.
National Parks and many other eco-conscious hotels, restaurants and bars with similar initiatives understand their role as a large corporate citizen with great influence around the world. These companies are the ones setting the example and affecting impactful change. In a city like Miami, where change is already upon us, with sea level rise, it is not a bad idea to develop this ocean-minded perspective.
Midtown Miami Thinks Blue
One great way to become more blue minded is to join the Surfrider Foundation. The Miami Chapter of Surfrider is a non-profit grassroots organization founded 15 years ago to begin pressing the City of Miami Beach to enforce existing litter laws and reverse the trashing of our local beaches. Surfrider’s Rise Above Plastics program aims at seeing the plastics problem as a land based one. They promote a move away from single-use plastic straws, bottles, and bags that are the worst contributors to ocean and beach pollution.
Surfrider Miami and Ft. Lauderdale host monthly events that provide you with lots of opportunities to contribute and get to know a really cool crowd of people making a difference. Check out their monthly calendar: Surfrider Miami – Surfider Broward
