How To Travel Like it’s 2030
As 2021 hits and marks the beginning of a Decade of Action it is very apparent that the future is approaching us faster with innovative new practices that guide us to personal fulfillment. The nomadic lifestyle of the early human experience has always used travel as a ritual that connects us with a deeper sense of ourselves and everything around us. It is this author’s opinion that travel is a sacred act capable of granting its practitioner of gifts available beyond the external world only available to those from within. But only if they come into it with the right state of mind — or being.
The pandemic has granted us awareness of mindsets, behaviors, and experiences that spark our curiosity and lead us to new ways of being and travel. This can create an incredible positive reflection in the world and society around us. Some of the organizations that are leading the way to a new world have been pioneering this path for years. While newcomers have recently captured the imagination of possibilities and become the darlings of the destination seekers’ conversation. Regardless of who began, who is center stage, and who will remain, the following organizations are in clear view of today (and tomorrow’s) psycho-social travel experience.
In the future every traveler will adopt mindsets that drive personal and collective growth.
“Transformational travel (TT) is more than just a feeling or a moment. It is more than that flush of happiness and wonder that comes from a special experience and connection, and what that is, is up to you.”
The Transformational Travel Council (TTC) is leading the way in bringing the mind-body connection to the travel experience. Started in 2016 by Jake Haupert and a passionate collective of individuals, the conscious HEART and soul of the future traveler seems to be gravitating to the adoption of their tenets, practices, and use of their innovative take on the Travel Journal.
The world is changing. It’s time for conscious evolution in travel and tourism. We’re using this moment as a launchpad to something completely different, a transformation economy, and encouraging a mindset, approach, and model that measures success based on more holistic, conscious, and virtuous outcomes. Travel joins other catalysts for personal transformation and new lifestyle choices, from family and relationships to life events, personal health, etc. To be further explored, travel can be catalytic in a handful of areas: relationships, ecological footprint, consumer and travel choices, social purpose and philanthropic commitments, lifestyle and time management choices, and mindful, contemplative practice.
In the future, every day will be an Adventure.
Established in 1990, the Adventure Travel Trade Association is the largest global network of adventure travel leaders. Their community is made up of ~30,000 individual guides, tour operators, lodges, travel advisors, tourism boards, destination marketing, and management organizations, outdoor educators, gear companies, and travel media who share a belief and commitment to sustainable tourism. The connections and creativity of this vibrant community come together both virtually and in-person to create and deliver the solutions that propel their businesses and communities toward a responsible future.
Their traveler facing publication Adventure. Life-changing travel must also be sustainable travel. Such commitment in turn honors the people, environment, and economies of incredible destinations around the world.
Through compelling images and well-crafted stories, research, and curated news of interest, they inspire the curious to try new destinations, branch out in their activities, interact deeply with nature, and experience different cultures in the most respectful way possible.
In the future, every part of our planet will be Sustainable.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism. As the leading international organization in the field of tourism, UNWTO promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development, and environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide.
The UNWTO is one of the agencies of the United Nations which created The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, and provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
In the future, every trip you take will contribute to a better planet.
It all started in 2013 when David Leventhal realized that guests who were staying at Playa Viva, his boutique hotel in Mexico expressed it was difficult to find similar ethos-driven eco-luxury resorts around the world. A few years later, he met Amanda Ho, the founder of a travel magazine who was passionate about covering sustainable hospitality in her storytelling. They connected deeply on understanding the increased desire for values-driven experiences, and went on to partner and create Regenerative Travel in 2019.
They exist to inspire people to reconnect with intimate experiences and adventures. They stand for the deep, powerful connection that comes with these experiences whether taken alone or shared with those you care most about. With their visionary, sustainable destinations, no two interactions will ever be the same, making it easy and accessible for those who love to actively make a positive change in the world to do so, knowing they are creating a lasting impact for generations to come all around the world.
In the future every hotel, short-term rental, and/or vrbo will offer you a concierge that can connect you with the perfect meal, experience, or adventure by simply thinking it and you will receive a ride there.
While integrations between Telepathy and Technology may take a few more years, one company is bringing a ‘heart-centric’ approach by creating chatbots with personalities and artificial intelligence to connect hotel guests to local experiences. You can for example stay at The Fontaine in Kansas City and text Francesca, the digital concierge, and she can automatically recommend the best authentic Mexican food, connect you with an underground speakeasy or connect you with a local shaman for a reiki session to start your sustainable travel trip on the right chakra.
The future will contain clean air in every country.
Sure you have a Netflix Subscription. A subscription for clothing from Rent the Runway. But how about a $10 subscription that reduces carbon dioxide from the air? Well, that’s a subscription that you don’t have to wait until 2030 to sign up for.
Tomorrow’s Air was founded in 2019 by Christina Beckmann and Nim de Swardt after their life-changing experience together in Antarctica with Sir Robert Swan OBE (the first person to walk to both the North and South Poles). Incubated by the Adventure Travel Trade Association with its global network of sustainable travel partners and launching in partnership with revolutionary direct air capture provider Climeworks, aims to harness the power of travel for tangible climate action.
