1 Hotel South Beach

With walls made from plants, a fleet of Tesla electric vehicles, and not a single plastic to-go container or straw on the property, 1 Hotel South Beach is making their stance on sustainability loud and clear.

The Miami Beach oceanfront property is among the largest on South Beach and is the first in a series of eco-luxury hotels for Barry Sternlicht, the Founder and CEO of Starwood Capital Group.

I think what we are talking about is improving the world one bed, one towel, one plastic bottle that isn’t in the hotel at a time.”

The hotel is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified property promoting sustainability in as many details as it can.  From using reclaimed beetle wood in its property and furniture designs to using 100% organic cotton sheets to its three farm-to-table restaurants run by Chef Tom Colicchio, 1 Hotel wants its guests to develop a relationship with nature.

We’re not a brand, we’re a cause.”

Sternlicht created the 1 Hotel brand to be more than a brand.  To instead, become a platform for guests to share discussions about the environment with like-minded people.  One of the ways 1 Hotel supports opportunities to delve into these discussions is by partnering with the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science to host kid and adult-friendly events, workshops, and talks with local scientists.

One World

The “1” in 1 Hotel stands for “one world”.  In a time when the climate is changing more rapidly than ever and Miami is working towards facing the challenges that result from climate change, it is refreshing to see a large hotel chain use their energy efficiently.  They recognize the role they can play as a voice for the environment and are doing what they can to bring awareness to their guests.  They are creating a ripple effect that we hope becomes the standard for sustainability in Miami from Midtown to Downtown to the global community.
