Clean Summer Beauty
By: Ariana Rodriguez
Summer is around the corner, which means it is time to prep our skin for bare-faced beach days. Be it to take it to your next sustainable travel destination or for a sunny staycation, skin-care is the star of the show during summer. Makeup is just the support team during these hot days. Mainly everyone embraces natural beauty in the summer, but everyone should follow this trend every season.
Some products save your skin, but then some save the world too. With Earth’s current circumstances and global warming, a product launch should keep both the Earth and the skin in mind. Sustainable beauty products are making their way into the spotlight. This article will show you the must-have sustainable products for the summer.
Why Choose Clean Products?
Sustainability is always on brand – most of the products that are not sustainable do not work well with most skin types. For example, some contain micro-beads (AKA plastic) in exfoliants which are not the best for your overall skin health and the world. Sometimes there are not so many sustainable formulas in a sustainable glass container. So, at least choose a clean product that was ethically made, even if it is in a recycled bottle. Clean products are seen even in food stores like Whole Foods.
As the sun makes its way a bit closer to us, our sunscreens must be in our possession at all times. Everyone should apply sunscreen every two hours, so keep that sunscreen near that chapstick of yours. We want the sun to give us a glow and not the unpleasant aftermath of having too much fun in the sun.
Skincare brands have been creating their sunscreen formulas for the face. The masterminds of skincare brands should know how imperative it is to apply sunscreen. With that being said, here are some sustainable sunscreen products: Biossance, SuperGoop, and more! Check out EWG for more clean formulas.
I just wanted to announce the essential skincare step first! Of course, the first step is a cleanser, and then you follow up with a serum of choice. Then seal the deal with moisturizer. At night, you may add more steps when necessary, as you may add retinol or exfoliant. I recommend not exfoliating and applying retinol on the same day because your new skin is more sensitive to the sun.
Let’s start with the basics. Here are some clean face washes that I recommend: Youth to the People’s Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser and Tatcha’s Rice Skin-Softening Cleanser. I currently use Youth to the People’s Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser. It comes in a glass container, so you won’t feel guilty after disposing of another plastic tube into the trash.
Serums are the most active in your routine since it stays on your skin, so choose a good one! Wander Beauty has a clean vitamin C serum that will leave you glowy and ready for the sun. Vitamin C helps you become less prone to sun damage, which might happen a lot during a sustainable travel stay. Who wants more sun damage during a trip? No one. So, Vitamin C is perfect for everyday use. Also, Herbivore3 has an excellent retinol alternative that is clean!
So, you may be thinking a moisturizer is not needed because it will be hot anyways. The answer is yes; we do need moisturizer. Without a moisturizer, the skin will start producing more oil which leads to breakouts in some people. So, to prevent that, a good clean moisturizer should do the trick. Daily Greens Oil-Free Gel Moisturizer with Moringa and Papaya from Farmacy is perfect for the summer.

Makeup, on the other hand, has not gotten with the program yet. There are only a few sustainable/clean makeup products on the market. I personally use Tarte since it’s cruelty-free and it is clean makeup. I am still on the lookout for more clean brands, so that means they need to make more ASAP, right?
Just remember to not go heavy on the makeup and let your skin breathe as much as possible!
My Two Cents
When packing for your next sustainable travel trip, think sustainably! Who wants those products that have harsh chemicals anyways? Everything is generally a chemical. I am. You are. We need to surround ourselves with good chemicals. So, clean beauty stays away from toxins that are harmful to our bodies and the planet. So, get your summer essentials prepared before summer hits!
