What project are you working on now?
Working on my first Wynwood solo show which will be held at Lulus Laboratorium on Thursday, May 12, 2016, entitled “I am Skott Marsi”
This is your second solo show in Miami, right? How has your work developed since the previous show?
This actually is my 4th solo in Miami, but my first show in the Wynwood Art District. My last show was this past Art Basel (Dec 2015). I was working on transforming the inside of a dark nightclub, to a black light gallery using Fluorescent paint…This show is based on the lifestyle brand of Skott Marsi and portrays the importance of fashion to art and art to fashion.
What’s the last show that you saw?
Astro from Paris who had his first Show in Wynwood Miami on April 20th, 2016.
What’s the last show that surprised you? Why?
The last show was technically an event that took place in Dubai. Myself, along with 99 other artists from all over the world, were invited by the Sheik himself, to come paint the worlds largest canvas. In a total of 2 weeks, we collaborated to transform the worlds largest canvas, setting the Guinness book of world records in 2014.
What’s your favorite place to see art?
Definitely, would have to say NYC! Artists with All different styles and cultures are creating a free public hide. I’ve been blessed to travel and see many different places such as Spain, Amsterdam, Italy Dubai… I fell in love with Spain, I studied there for 3 months and it broadened my horizon in Art helping me choose my career path.
What’s the most indispensable item in your studio?
Definitely Music.
Where are you finding ideas for your work these days?
Living in the moment. Creativity is maximized when your living in the moment. I’m following my dreams and finding motivation every day by being at peace with one’s mind, body, and soul.
Do you collect anything?
Not really, however, Sneakers are a weakness of mine.
What’s the last artwork you made?
I completed one of the biggest Murals in Wynwood, located off N. Miami Ave and 25th St.
What’s the first artwork you ever sold?
New York City, SoHo NY.
What’s your art-world pet peeve?
Covering your face…Ive been covering my face since the day i started creating graffiti. This tactic was originated by old school graffiti vandals. Graffiti was a way for street artist to gain recognition without being apart of any gallery. The objective of graffiti was to vandalize to take control of a certain object. However, the art form was still considered illegal. so the artists would cover their faces, avoiding exposure to the police. Today, artist take advantage of that. Posing as a graffiti artist because they receive the slightest bit of recognition. They pose for pictures in front of their “lack of effort” artwork or by standing on cars when really, they are not respecting the origin of the masked art form. In order to be considered a street artist/ graffiti artist you need to be relevant in the streets.
What’s your favorite post-gallery watering hole or restaurant?
As far as Miami is concerned, my favorite restaurant would be Wynwood Kitchen, Prime 112 or Drunken Dragon. I usually go to art galleries, get inspired, then come back to the studio to paint.
What work of art do you wish you owned? What would you do to get it?
When I get my first Picasso I will keep it forever.
What international art destination do you most want to visit?
Paris and Hong-Kong! Asia for sure.
Who’s your favorite living artist?
Eminem. He’s a creative genius who created a brand name out of nothing. He plays with the public’s mind and does it with great passion.
He says what people don’t like to hear, and says it in a way that can be misunderstood, things he doesn’t necessarily believe in to stir up emotions. He is a master at his trade, a creative genius, and a great businessman.
